The eternal cycle
Shortly before his death, Bernard Buffet provided a clear assessment of the world on the brink of the 21st century. The painting L’Enfer (1999) depicts the omnipotence of construction machinery, incapable of ushering in a bright future, leaving only desolation in its wake. Should we see this as an allusion to humanity's enduring capacity for self-destruction?
In La Boucherie (1999), a bloodthirsty butcher seems to embody the boundless greed that drives one towards inhumanity. The memory of the Second World War and the tragedies it wrought had never left Bernard Buffet. Through these paintings, he may have sought to warn a newer, more carefree generation about the dangers of succumbing to the same destructive forces.
