Painter and storyteller
Bernard Buffet had a passion for storytelling through expansive works.
Well-read and largely self-taught, the painter drew inspiration from historical events and renowned literary works, all of which shared the common thread of being epic narratives. These stories allowed him to unleash his talent for large-scale compositions. Among the great adventures that stimulated his imagination were the life of Joan of Arc, Dante's Divine Comedy, Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Homer's The Odyssey.
